Short answer
Yes. God wants you to know, not just hope. Assurance does not come from feeling good enough but from trusting what Jesus has done, taking God at His word, and the Holy Spirit’s witness in your heart. If you are trusting Christ today, you can be sure of eternal life.
God wants you to know
John wrote one of his letters for exactly this reason: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life
(1 John 5:13). Not guess, not hope for the best: know. Uncertainty is not humility; it is often a sign that we are still looking at ourselves instead of at Jesus.
Three things to rest on
First, the finished work of Jesus. Salvation depends on what He did on the cross, not on how well you have performed this week. Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life
(John 5:24).
Second, God’s promises. God cannot lie. Whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life
(John 3:16) is a promise to be taken at face value. Feelings come and go; the promise stays.
Third, the witness of the Spirit. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God
(Romans 8:16). That quiet, growing certainty that God is your Father is His gift. It usually shows itself in new desires: love for God, hunger for His Word, sorrow over sin and love for His people (1 John 3:14).
Keep trusting
Assurance is not a licence to drift. The same Bible that promises security calls us to keep believing, keep following and keep close to Jesus (Colossians 1:23, Hebrews 3:14). A living faith holds on to Christ, and Christ holds on to those who come to Him: Whoever comes to me I will never cast out
(John 6:37). If you have wandered, come back today; He has not changed.
How this connects across the Bible
The Bible is one story. Here is how this theme runs from the Old Testament to Jesus:
- God made a covenant with Abraham and swore by Himself so that His people could be certain (Genesis 15:17-18); Hebrews says that oath is the anchor of our hope (Hebrews 6:17-19).
- The Passover blood was the sign that judgement would pass over (Exodus 12:13); through faith in Jesus’ blood we do not come into judgement (John 5:24).
- David could say the LORD was his shepherd and he would dwell in God’s house for ever (Psalm 23:1-6); Jesus, the good shepherd, says His sheep will never perish (John 10:27-28).
- Jeremiah promised a covenant in which God’s people would all know Him and be forgiven (Jeremiah 31:34); John writes so that believers may know they have eternal life (1 John 5:13).
