Short answer

Death is not the end. The Bible teaches that those who trust Jesus go to be with Him immediately, that one day everyone will be raised bodily, and that Jesus will judge all people. Those who belong to Him will live with God for ever in a renewed creation; those who reject Him will be separated from Him for ever.

With Christ straight away

Jesus told the dying thief beside Him, Today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). Paul, facing possible execution, said that to depart and be with Christ was far better (Philippians 1:23). For a believer, death is a doorway, not a dead end. The body rests; the person is with the Lord.

Resurrection for everyone

That is not the whole story. God’s plan is not disembodied souls floating for ever but resurrection. Jesus said, An hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment (John 5:28-29). Jesus’ own empty tomb is the guarantee: As in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Judgement, heaven and hell

Everyone will stand before Jesus. Those whose trust is in Him will enjoy what the Bible calls eternal life: unending, conscious joy with God in a new heaven and a new earth. Those who have refused Him will face what Jesus soberly called eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46): conscious separation from God. We say this not to frighten but because Jesus said it, and because He said it in order to save us from it.

The wonderful news is that no one needs to face that. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live (John 11:25). Death has been beaten. The question is only whether we are on the winning side.

How this connects across the Bible

The Bible is one story. Here is how this theme runs from the Old Testament to Jesus:

What we believe at Spring Valley

We believe in the bodily resurrection of all people, the everlasting conscious bliss of all who truly believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, and the everlasting conscious punishment of all whose names are not written in the Book of Life.
